Classical singing star Hayley Westenra, 22, who is also Unicefs youngest-ever ambassador, joined other stars lending their support to the conference. The event aimed to broaden the career horizons of young women, encouraging them to consider non-traditional jobs. SIX students have won Financial Mail's prestigious Apprentice Challenge competition with their innovative idea for neon make-up that glows in the dark. The six girls, aged 15-16, from Kendrick School in Reading have won £3000 for their school and £100 each in our nationwide contest to invent, cost and bring to market a beauty product, sponsored by NatWest. They will be presented with their trophy by HRH the Princess Royal at a special once-in-a-lifetime event being held by Financial Mail this week and NatWest have offered to help the winning team and the two runner-up teams launch their products. Kendrick's team's product, named Ultra Visible, beat the two other impressive shortlisted entries in front of an audience of more than 350 students and teachers at the climax of Financial Mail's science and technology themed Breaking the Mould careers conference on Monday in Mayfair, central London. The finalists had received help from NatWest business advisers to refine the financial aspects of their bids and were filmed pitching their products to professional beauty buyers from the John Lewis Partnership. The teams faced gruelling questioning from the Apprentice Challenge judges, led by Peter Ibbetson, chairman of small business for the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, in the 'boardroom' at the live final before team Ultra Visible went on to win the top prize. Six students from Withington Girls School in Manchester carried off the £3000 prize in this years Apprentice Challenge from Financial Mail, sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotlands MoneySense educational programme. The team, calling themselves Money Minded, triumphed in a nationwide contest to devise and market a game to make teaching personal finance fun. Withingtons game beat three other impressive shortlisted entries in front of an audience of 350 students and teachers at the climax of Financial Mails Breaking the Mould conference on Monday, in Park Lane, central London. The Money Minded team, aged 16 to 17, faced a grilling from the stars of BBC TVs The Apprentice Margaret Mountford (Lord Alan Sugars right-hand woman), Saira Khan and Tim Campbell in the boardroom before going on to win the £3000 for their school.

The ad, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the American Postal Workers Union and the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, exposes the real reason the USPS is facing a crisis that is jeopardizing the nation's mail system. "The Postal Service is recording financial losses," the ad states, "but not for reasons you might think." The USPS carries an extraordinary financial burden that no other government agency or company bears, the ad notes. A 2006 law, the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, requires the Postal Service to pre-fund the health care benefits of future retirees. It forces the agency to pre-fund a 75-year liability in just 10 years, which costs the USPS more than $5.5 billion annually. This mandate is the reason the Postal Service is threatening to end Saturday mail delivery service, lay off 120000 workers, close thousands of post offices and eliminate hundreds of mail processing facilities. In addition, the Postal Service is required to overpay billions more into its pension accounts in the Civil Service Retirement System and the Federal Employees Retirement System. "Congress created this problem, and Congress can fix it," the ad concludes. It will air until the end of November on CNN, MSNBC and FOX News.
